信じようと、信じまいと― 神は居ない。アメリカの裁判記録に、そう記される事件があった。 ノースカロライナ州チェロキー郡に住む大金持ちの女性が、次のように遺言して死亡した。 「私の全財産は、神に遺贈する」 親族たちは、相続権のある「神」を巡って大もめにもめ、遂には裁判沙汰にまで発展した。 裁判所は、保安官を呼び、相続人の捜索を命じた。 捜索を終了した保安官は、証言席で聖書に手を置き、神に誓ってこう証言した。 「正規の調査の結果、チェロキー郡には、『神』なる者は存在しないことが判明しました」
